This Neo-Renaissance stone bridge has connected Nové Město and Smíchov since 1878, when it became an important link between the city centre and the rapidly developing industrial district. It is named after the Czech historian František Palacký, whose statue on the right bank seems to keep watch over Prague’s third-oldest surviving bridge, the first to carry a tram line. The seven-arch bridge was built in the spirit of the Czech National Revival, using coloured granite blocks in the national colours. Myslbek’s richly sculpted original decoration, damaged during an air raid in 1945, can now be admired in Vyšehradské sady park.
