Prague City Hall — Paternoster Tour

share

The paternoster in the New Town Hall represents original interconnection of architectural mastery & technical innovations of the early 1900s. One of our latest tours will take you for a ride in Prague’s first continuously moving elevator.

During the 45-minute guided tour, learn more about the historical elevator and visit beautifully decorated interiors of the historical New Town Hall that are not accessible to the public. The building fuses masterful architecture with modern period technology.

The tours start at the entrance of the Clementinum Astronomical Tower (National library).

The guided tour has several stops. It will introduce the history and present of Mariánské Square and the exterior architecture of the Prague City Hall. Inside, participants will walk up a representative staircase dating to 1911, lined among other things with marble, peek into the large (assembly) hall and, after the safety briefing, take a ride in the paternoster elevator. With the help of authentic photographs, they will see what the inside the paternoster machine room looks like, get acquainted with the principle of driving the cabins and learn that the elevator cabins do not tip over.

Increased security is observed  on the 45-minute Prague City Hall — Paternoster Tour, and since the building still functions as the current seat of the representatives of the capital city of Prague, tours are organised only in small numbers of participants according to a specific schedule, usually on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Due to increased safety requirements, the tour is open only to persons over 15 years of age, in good physical condition and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
