The only surviving part of the former Bishop’s Court, which from the late 12th century occupied an extensive site stretching from the Vltava to what is now Josefská Street, is the Gothic tower in the courtyard on Dražického náměstí. Its construction was connected with a major redevelopment of the complex in the 14th century under Bishop Jan IV of Dražice. The Bishop’s Court served not only as the archbishop’s prestigious residence, but also as the administrative centre of the Prague Archdiocese and the seat of the Prague consistory. It was looted and burned down in 1419 during the Hussite Wars and never rebuilt. The square tower, now topped by a roof terrace, forms part of the Bishop’s House hotel and is not open to the public. It can, however, be seen both from the gallery of the Lesser Town Bridge Tower and at close quarters from the courtyard of Art Café 14.
