Petřín Tower was ceremonially opened 135 years ago together with the Mirror Maze that was originally designed as a fair pavilion of the Czech Tourist Club. To mark this anniversary, we created a three-part series of collectable postcards featuring period photographs from the construction of the tower, a younger sister of the famed Eiffel Tower.

On 21st August, 1891, locals and visitors poured in Petřín Hill to participate in the launch of the brand new construction. The idea emerged after the 1889 Paris Exposition (Exposition Universelle) where the Eiffel Tower was the undisputed star.

The period photographs by a significant Czech photographer Jindřich Eckert (1833-1905) were kindly provided by the Prague City Archives. Captured are three different stages of Petřín Tower’s construction in 1891. Foundation works dated 1st May; construction works from 13th June; and the tower shortly before final. Interestingly, the pictures indicate that women participated in the construction, too.

Enjoy authentic history of the prominent Prague landmark.
