Charles Bridge Museum

  • for kids

The exhibition presents rare works of sacred art from the Šumava region – from the late Gothic period till present. The central exhibit is the polychrome woodcarving Pieta from Podlesí (Vogelsang) from 1510–1520, attributed to Master Oplakávání Krista ze Zvíkova, one of the most valuable works of Czech late Gothic art. In addition to historical works, works by contemporary artists are on display such as Kristina Maršíková Málková, Michal Vavrečka, and Dagmar Hamsíková showcasing that Christian inspiration remains alive in today's visual arts. The exhibition also includes a high-quality full-size replica of the Shroud of Turin, kept in Turin Cathedral, which is believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. It bears an image of a man bearing marks of flogging and crucifixion as described in the Gospels. Visitors can sample egg specialties in the local Baroque café and toast with the Velvary egg cognac. A legend has it that Charles Bridge is the only one in the world built not only of stone, but also of mortar containing eggs. It might be due to this unusual "recipe" that the bridge has survived more than 670 years, who knows.
