This marks the ninth collaboration on an exhibition organised under the auspices of Palaestra, an association for extracurricular activities. This time, the aim is to showcase the inspiring artistic dynamism of a group of volunteers who form a solid foundation of support for the children and families who benefit from Palaestra’s services. “The Story” is an exhibition that seeks to demonstrate that narrative continues to have a firm and secure place in painting and drawing. The pictorial form of storytelling allows the story to be perceived as a whole – as a sequence of separate yet interconnected images – through which the viewer can leaf as they go, or navigate in various directions and contexts. The exhibition offers the perspective of an ‘unassuming’ observer who aims to remain unpretentious and personal. Whilst it addresses the viewer through classical painterly means, it does so in a way that imbues them with unexpected possibilities for interpreting seemingly ordinary stories. The exhibiting artists – Ivan Komárek (1956), Filip Horyna (1984) and Vojtěch Adamec (1956) – are united precisely by this approach. In their case, this is not a premeditated strategy, a theoretical construct or a pose, but rather a personality type that cannot help but return to narrative storytelling regardless of the prevailing social dogma.
