Hedy Lamarr — A Woman of Many Faces

Hedy Lamarr was an extraordinary figure: versatile, intelligent, creative, and renowned as ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’. She was born in 1914 in Vienna to a Jewish family as Hedwig Kiesler. She sought recognition for her intellect, not for her looks. She was married six times and had three children. She viewed the glamour of Hollywood with a degree of detachment. She preferred to devote herself to her inventive spirit and, during the Second World War, developed a secret communication system that paved the way for the development of today’s technologies such as GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. She did not receive recognition for this until much later. She died in 2000 and was buried in her beloved hometown of Vienna. The exhibition traces the stages of Hedy Lamarr’s life, including her time in Prague. The life of this extraordinary woman would probably have unfolded differently today. The exhibition thus ties in with current debates on female empowerment, the #MeToo movement and the power to constantly surpass oneself.
