The exhibition What Burns, Remains explores the disruption of forest ecosystems – particularly as a result of fires, logging and the colonisation of the landscape – as well as the subsequent possibilities for regeneration. The works on display address the critical state of forests following a fire or other destructive events. It presents a collective project focusing on the transformation of the forest landscape in the Czech Republic, with an emphasis on the 2022 fire in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, and the stories unfolding between the destruction that has taken place and the subsequent arduous recovery. Photographs, paintings and video recordings from the field will be presented. The gallery setting will also be complemented by a spatial intervention in the form of a wooden structure evoking a forest refuge, symbolically offering shelter from the ravages of the elements, or indeed from the difficult reflections on humanity’s stewardship of nature.
