To mark the tenth anniversary of Adolf Born’s passing on May 22, 2016, the Great Gallery of Chodovská tvrz is organizing a retrospective exhibition of his work. Adolf Born was one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Czech visual arts. He was not only a painter but also an exceptional illustrator who managed to combine imagination, humor, and a unique artistic style into unmistakable images. He first studied at the Faculty of Education at Charles University, then at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM), and finally at the Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Professor Antonín Pelc. Born’s humor and perspective were also reflected in his film work. Since the 1960s, his works have been exhibited worldwide and have received numerous prestigious awards. In 1974, he was named Cartoonist of the Year at the World Exhibition in Montreal; later, he received the title of Meritorious Artist, the Medal of Merit (1st Grade), and a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to animated film at the Anifilm festival. He was also a recipient of the French Order of Arts and Letters. The exhibition will be complemented by the sculptures of the renowned sculptor and ceramicist Hana Purkrábková, who would have celebrated her 90th birthday this year. Hana Purkrábková’s sculptures represent a distinctive and personal body of work with an unmistakable artistic expression, as well as a typical fascination with the human figure, which becomes a reflection of the state of the soul. Hana Purkrábková does not depict specific faces, but rather human types; she is not interested in specific features, but in generalizing parables of human pettiness, imperfection, and minor vices. date and time Tue—Sun 13:00—19:00
