In Czechia, the Way of St. James consists of six pilgrimage routes that connect to the European network to Santiago de Compostela and lead through a landscape full of natural and cultural monuments. The Zittau (Žitavská), Všeruby (Všerubská)  and Iron (Železná) routes pass through Prague, meeting and diverging at the Church of St. James the Greater.

The St James pilgrimage routes that pass through the Czech Republic are part of an extensive European network leading to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. You can choose from six routes in the Czech Republic – Zittau, Všeruby, Iron, South Bohemian (Jihočeská), East Bohemia (Východočeská) and Moravian-Silesian (Moravskoslezská), totalling 1,371 km that connect our country with pilgrimage trails in Germany, Poland and Austria. They lead through a landscape rich in natural beauty, cultural monuments and spiritual sites – across old country paths, plains, along rivers, through wooded hills and past pilgrimage sites.

The Czech Ultreia association, whose name translates as “onward, ever onward”, is responsible for restoring and maintaining these routes. It was founded in 2008 by pilgrims who had returned from their own journey to Santiago and wanted to share their experience – not just practical information, but also inspiration to seek peace, inner tranquillity and a return to the essentials.

Since 2017, thanks to cooperation with the Czech Tourist Club, these routes have been marked with a blue and yellow shell on tourist signposts. Most sections follow historical pilgrimage routes, which bear the legacy of ancient pilgrims and our cultural memory.
