Zilvarovy vinice

On the steep southern slope of Černý kopec hill above the arch of Troja Bridge, this vineyard forms the gateway to the Troja Basin. Although it is one of Prague’s youngest vineyards, covering an area of more than 2 ha it is one of the largest. Since 2015, the vineyard house has been owned by Zdeněk Zilvar, who has set up a modern winery here and planted Riesling and Pinot Noir on the slate bedrock of the steep vineyard. The virgin harvest fell on the 2019 vintage. The high-quality wines produced by this vineyard can be tasted and also bought in the newly opened Zilvar Winery shop.

more about the place

Black slate, the nearby Vltava River and sloping hills. That’s the Zilvar Vineyard. They grow grapes on 2 hectares of their own vineyards following an organic philosophy. The stony soil accumulates heat during the day and retains it even after dusk, while temperatures are very low in the morning. Yet it is these temperature fluctuations that really improve the final aroma of the wine. The slopes have a gradient of up to 60 degrees and, together with the nearby Vltava River, provide the best possible conditions for growing Riesling & Pinot Noir. The history of winemaking here dates back to the era of Charles IV. Records dating back as far as the 16th century show that there was a farmhouse here with a working press and vineyards planted with Burgundy grape varieties. In the 19th century, the place was home to the famous Pomological Institute, a school for winemakers and fruit growers. The current owner, Ing. Zdeněk Zilvar DipWSET, studied viticulture at WSET in London and at the Faculty of Oenology and Viticulture at UC Davis in the USA.
