The Letná Carousel

Letenský kolotoč

The historical carousel in front of the National Technical Museum is running again. Praguers of all ages have loved riding this wooden carousel from as far back as 1892, first in Královské Vinohrady and 2 years after that, at Letná, where it stands to this day in the original Neo-Renaissance wooden pavilion, built to a regular twelve-sided polygon ground plan. This oldest preserved carousel in Europe is fitted out with 21 life-size horses covered in genuine horse hide, and several 1930s-style automobiles. Originally, the carousel was driven by a horse-engine mechanism, with trained personnel. It was not until a few years later that muscle power was replaced by an electric motor.
