Tetín

The early medieval Tetín Castle is connected with a Slavic hillfort, the power centre of the Přemyslid dynasty, which was probably founded at the end [of the 9th] or beginning of the 10th century. The Tetín hillfort was the place of residence and murder of Princess Ludmila - the first Czech woman known by name, the first Czech Christian ruler, founder of the Přemyslid dynasty, grandmother of St. Wenceslas and the first Czech saint. The spiritual significance of Tetín is evidenced by the above-average number of churches; there are three in the village - the Church of St. Catherine, the Church of St. Ludmila and the Church of St. John of Nepomuk. They are mute witnesses of a site that has seen flocks of pilgrims come and go over the centuries through to the present day.

more about the place

Of the three sacral buildings, only the Church of St. John of Nepomuk can be associated with the time of Princess Ludmila. It’s location was most likely the site of a wooden building dedicated to St. Michael. The Kristian Legend claims that it was ordered to be built over the grave of Princess Ludmila by Drahomíra, Ludmila’s daughter-in-law and the one who commissioned her murder. It is believed that Prince Wenceslas had his grandmother’s body removed from this place in 925 and ordered it to be transferred to Prague Castle.

In the immediate vicinity of the Church of St. Catherine stands the youngest of the three churches, the single-nave Church of St. Ludmila. The present Baroque building was built in the 1780s. The interior of this sanctuary is dominated by the main altar from around 1700. The central image depicts St. Ludmila and the priest Paul teaching St. Wenceslas. The glass cabinet in the altar mensa deserves the pilgrim’s attention, as it contains the stone on which, according to tradition, St. Ludmila was supposedly put to death.

Guided tours of all three Tetín churches and other services for groups are provided by the Tetín Museum.

The pilgrimage to St. Ludmila is usually held on the second weekend in September.
Tetín and its surroundings are mapped by the Tetínské vyhlídky nature trail.
