history

The Vineyard House is originally a Baroque structure and one of the few that have been preserved. Part of it was built in the 18th century, while the western wing was built in the first half of the 19th century. In 1840, it belonged to the Brothers of Mercy and the Order of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth in Prague. It is a brick, single-storey building with rectangular ground plan and very thick walls accompanied by a range of reinforcing masonry. The house has a single-tract layout. The rooms have timbered ceilings and are lit by relatively small windows set in deep segmental relieving arches. Its western façade is adorned with two horizontal rectangular windows. The house has a shingle, collar-beam roof with bolted joints, an alteration dating to the 20th century. Today, it still serves as a facility for winemakers, but most of the space is occupied by the wine shop, which underwent significant renovations and modernisation from 2022 to 2024.

Above the vineyard house is St. Claire’s Chapel. The small chapel is the dominant feature not only of the vineyard, but of whole Troja district. Dedicated to St. Claire, the patron saint and namesake of builder’s wife Claire Bernadine, a free woman from Malzan, the chapel was built by Count Václav Vojtěch of Šternberk in the late 17th century. After a fire in 1924, the chapel received a new roof and was last restored in 1996.
The interior is simple, with a single room featuring a brick floor and a flat ceiling. The current altar, dating from around 1924, is adorned with a Baroque painting depicting the Holy Trinity with the Virgin Mary and Franciscan saints, while the crucifix dates to the mid-18th century.
