history

The building’s history dates back to 1907 and the establishment of the First Prague Automobile Factory, later renamed Praga. Passenger and commercial vehicles, as well as components for them, were manufactured in the ČKD Kolbenova complex.

Hall E, which today houses studios, was built between 1931 and 1934 as the central postal warehouse. Karel Skorkovský’s company used unique columns with an octagonal cross‑section and mushroom‑shaped capitals. The architectural design of the building is the work of Josef Kalous, a pupil of Jan Kotěra. The distinctive chimney with its water tank, now unique in Prague, was originally part of the boiler house serving the warehouse complex, which has not been preserved. After the war, the entire complex was taken over by the Praga national enterprise, which added an additional frame construction storey to the building. The building has been preserved in an authentic state and has been protected as a cultural heritage site since 2003. A large part of Hall E is now used as artists’ studios, initiating the gradual transformation of the former factory into an arts centre known as the Pragovka Art District.
