overview opening hours admission At the turn of the 17th and 18th century, the abbess of the Benedictine convent of St. George at Prague Castle had Horní zámek (Upper Chateau) built on the site of the original fortress as an economic and administrative centre. The history of the Upper and Lower Chateaux in Panenské Břežany was strongly marked by the events of World War II, when they were taken by the German occupation army. Panenské Břežany thus played an important role in the history of the Protectorate of Czechoslovakia. Shortly after the onset of Nazi occupation, the Upper Chateau became the residence of State Secretary K. H. Frank, while the Lower Chateau was the residence of Reich Protector Konstantin von Neurath, who was soon replaced by Acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich with his wife and children. The Upper Chateau now houses the Memorial to National Oppression and Resistance with an interactive exhibition titled Crime and Punishment, managed by the Prague East Regional Museum. The chateau grounds include the Chapel of St. Anne, one of the first works of Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. The Lower Chateau was built in the Empire style by Matthias Bedřich Riese-Stallburg in the 19th century. Note: This website contains an accessibility system.
