The Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Prague, at the foot of Petřín Hill, is the work of prominent Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek and architects Zdeněk Hölzel and Jan Kerel. It is situated on the eastern slope of Petřín Hill, directly opposite Vítězná Street.

more about the place

The monument consists of a massive, tapering staircase, at the top of which six figures are visible. The first is complete, the subsequent ones are gradually more and more mutilated and increasingly torso-like. The diminishing mass of the figures, which nevertheless remain standing, symbolizes the unbroken spirit of those from whom the totalitarian regime increasingly stripped their humanity. Of the last, seventh figure, only a foot with part of the instep remains — just a trace, yet still the trace of a human.

In the lower part of the monument, on metal plaques, as well as on a bronze strip running down the middle of the staircase, is the inscription: Victims of Communism 1948—1989: 205,486 convicted, 248 executed, 4,500 died in prisons, 327 perished on the borders, 170,938 citizens emigrated.

The memorial was unveiled in May 2002.
