overview about the place The tradition of vine-growing on the slopes below Prosek, at that time known as " Prosík", dates back to the times of Emperor Charles IV. The enlightened ruler played a major part in the huge rise of winemaking in Prague, and the hillsides above Vysočany, then called “Na nebeských horách” or "On the Heavenly Mountains", were more than suitable for growing grapes. The vineyard’s present name comes from the mid-19th century owner Josef Máchal, who made wine here before the area slowly gave way to the growing city. more about the place In the 20th century the slope was planted with apricot orchards and the St. Wenceslas Wine Cooperative was founded in 1996. That managed to restore the vineyard, with considerable funding from the city district of Prague 9. Riesling, Müller Thurgau, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Moravian Muscat and three blue varieties are grown here across roughly 2 hectares. The vineyard offers beautiful views of Vysočany and is a very pleasant place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. The group of enthusiasts who now take care of the Máchalka vineyard are proud to continue a winemaking tradition that dates back more than six centuries.
