KC Vozovna is a cultural centre. It organises film screenings, a theatre programme for children, and various educational courses and workshops. It prepares community events focused on neighbourhood life. The Vozovna Cultural Centre was opened together with a branch of the Municipal Library in November 2015. The venue was created through the reconstruction of a large supermarket and its basement storage areas dating from the 1970s.

history

The reconstruction was carried out according to a design by Projektil architekti, the studio behind a number of successful projects such as the National Technical Library in Prague and the Research Library in Hradec Králové. The timeless design brings simplicity, clarity and an abundance of natural light to the Vozovna interior. The cultural centre retains its raw concrete walls and is divided by glass partitions into halls of various sizes. Its flexible layout and a variety of informal spaces enable the centre to host a wide range of events.

The idea of combining a library branch with a multifunctional cultural centre first emerged in 2012, when the Municipal Library decided to close its Chmelnice branch but the Prague 3 district wanted to ensure that local residents would not lose access to library services. New premises were therefore created in which the library could not only continue its activities in a dignified setting, but also expand them to include a spacious children’s section and a cosy reading corner. Given the size of the building, it was also decided to establish a cultural and leisure centre on the same site. This brought a diverse cultural programme to an area that previously had no cultural facilities.

The name ‘Vozovna’ was inspired by the nearby tram depot, and reflects the area’s excellent tram service.
