Vyšehradský hřbitov cemetery became the final resting place of leading Czech figures, its most significant part being the central tomb, called Slavín [from “sláva” meaning renown]. It was here that Alphonse Mucha, who died on July 14, 1939, was laid to rest, at the decision of the Svatobor Association, the Slavín custodians.

more about the place

The funeral ceremony, which took place on July 19, 1939, began at half past twelve in the collegiate church of Sts George, Peter and Paul at Vyšehrad. It should be noted that for Alphonse Mucha, Vyšehrad was a more than symbolic place. According to a letter from his wife Marie, her husband had felt a bond with Vyšehrad since childhood, certainly thanks to his mother and also his uncle Beneš Metod Kulda, whose position as the Canon of Vyšehrad played a significant role.

Our source of information about the funeral itself is the Bulletin of the Capital City of Prague No. 29-30, whose report confirms that Mucha’s funeral, organized by Prague City Hall, became a truly national manifestation, with some one hundred thousand people taking part. In the presence of many celebrity guests, such as Jan Kapras, Minister of National Edification; Otakar Španiel, Czech sculptor and engraver; Vratislav Nechleba, Professor of the Academy of Fine Arts; with eulogies by Max Švabinský the celebrated artist on behalf of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts, and architect Jan Zázvorka on behalf of the Union of Fine Artists. The ceremonial funeral, at the behest and expense of the Capital City of Prague was carried out by the Vyšehrad Chapter.

Vyšehrad, which is one of the most important of Prague monuments, is associated with many major events in Czech history. Not only its status as the second seat of Czech princes and kings and the seat of an independent Chapter, but also its uniquely preserved Baroque battlements and the laudatory burial ground of the nations’ greats as well as its several churches make Vyšehrad well worth visiting.
