Kostel sv. Klimenta v Levém Hradci

Less than 10 km from the northern edge of Prague, on a promontory jutting from the left bank above the Vltava valley, lies one of the most important Christian sites in Bohemia. Levý Hradec was also the first power centre of the Přemyslids - the first Czech princely and royal dynasty. Surrounded by a cemetery, the Church of St. Clement contains the exposed foundations of a 9th century rotunda in its cellar. It was founded by Prince Bořivoj between 882 and 884 and became the oldest Christian sanctuary on Bohemian territory. Nowadays, the church has a single nave with a polygonal Gothic presbytery and a Baroque nave. The church and the hillfort are protected as a cultural monument.

more about the place

In the middle of the 16th century, a square bell tower was added to the south side of the presbytery. The interior furnishings are attractive for visitors, especially the main altar with an old Romanesque mensa. It bears a Baroque painting of St. Clement against a backdrop of Levý Hradec. There are also figural tombstones under the cloister, a bricked-up Romanesque window, ancient frescoes in the presbytery with the theme of the Passion of the Lord and depictions of the four church Fathers: St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, St. Gregory and others.
