Christmas in Prague

share

Christmas in Prague is a time when the Gothic spires, Baroque churches, and narrow lanes of the city’s Old Town are swathed in twinkling lights, the fragrance of spices, and the sound of carols. The city’s squares fill with wooden stalls featuring straw ornaments and handcrafted gifts, while the scent of mulled wine, mead, roasted chestnuts, and gingerbread drifts from beneath the grand Christmas trees. In churches throughout the city, enjoy richly adorned Nativity scenes and soak up the distinct ambiance of Czech Christmas concerts, ranging from Ryba’s Czech Christmas Mass to traditional hymns. Add the glowing bridges, intimate markets in the historic districts, and stalls offering the quintessential fried carp, and you will see why Christmas in Prague is one of the most enchanting in the world. Find inspiration in our curated list of the most captivating Christmas and New Year’s events and make the most of your time in Prague.

Nativity Scenes and Christmas Services in Prague churches

You may go into many churches in Prague to admire the craftsmanship of our forefathers and commemorate the birthplace of Jesus in the town of Bethlehem. Nativity scenes are usually displayed from 24 December to early January, and in some places for longer. Attending Mass brings us closer to the more spiritual and mysterious side of Christmas, carols are sung or the Czech Christmas Mass by Jakub Jan Ryba is performed. You can also find more information about the churches’ Christmas programmes on the Christian Christmas website.

Ice skating is an essential part of Christmas in Prague

For the third consecutive year, you can enjoy ice skating on Wenceslas Square daily from December 1st until the middle of February, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Skate rental, refreshments, and a selection of unique souvenirs from local artisans are available, which are sure to provide inspiration for Christmas presents.

Customs and Traditions

A Czech Christmas combines Christian and pagan traditions: the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and joy at the victory of light over darkness after the winter solstice. Because of this, among our customs, elements of folk piety are mixed with magical practices, fortune-telling and the attempt to gain the favour of the mysterious forces of nature. Get to know at least some of them.

The Old Town Square is the traditional focus of Christmas celebrations in Prague.  See what’s happening there right now!
