As every year, Prague's Municipal House will commemorate the founding of the independent Czechoslovak state on October 28 with an open house and tours of its representative rooms. This Art Nouveau building from the early 20th century is linked to the declaration of independence in 1918. The tour will take you through the representative halls on the first floor — Smetana Hall — Confectionery — Slovácký Salon — Božena Němcová Salon — Oriental Salon — Grégr Hall — Palacký Hall — Mayor’s Hall — Rieger Hall — Sladkovský Hall. One of the most interesting salons is the Mayor’s Hall, whose artistic decoration is a highly valued compact work by the world-famous Alfons Mucha. Other artists who contributed to the decoration of the Municipal House include painters Mikoláš Aleš, Jan Preisler, Karel Špillar, Max Švabinský, František Ženíšek, and sculptors Josef Mařatka, Josef Václav Myslbek, Karel Novák, and Ladislav Šaloun. The building itself is the work of architects Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka.
