Prague — various places

The last week of February will see the 19th annual Mene Tekel International Festival take place in Prague, dedicated to commemorating totalitarian regimes, human rights, and national memory through a wide range of cultural and educational events. The festival is organized in cooperation with professional institutions, memory organizations, and media partners to bring a program that is interesting for both professionals and the general public. Over the course of a week, visitors can attend exhibitions, conferences, film screenings, concerts, theater performances, discussions with eyewitnesses, and interactive programs for schools reflecting on 20th-century history and the consequences of totalitarian regimes in Czechoslovakia and around the world.

Programme

The festival will open on February 23 at the MAT cinema.

The program begins with the opening of the exhibition “The Eyes of State Security,” which presents unique photographic materials and archival documents from the communist era, and continues with other thematic exhibitions in historic locations throughout Prague. The festival also includes premieres of films distributed in the Czech Republic, such as student feature films with authentic themes from the period of political prisoners or totalitarianism, which are complemented by discussions and meetings with the filmmakers. The festival traditionally includes cultural evenings and gala concerts, such as a performance by the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory jazz big band, which is one of the highlights of the program and symbolizes freedom and solidarity through music.
