Jewish Museum in Prague — Pinkas Synagogue

The Pinkas Synagogue is dedicated to the memory of Czech and Moravian Jewish Holocaust victims. Their names are inscribed on the walls of the synagogue’s sanctuary and adjoining areas. The text of the inscriptions was compiled on the basis of card files that were discovered shortly after the war, including surviving transport schedules, registration lists and lists of survivors. On all interior walls are inscribed the names of Holocaust victims with their dates of birth and death. The actual date of death is unknown in most cases, and is therefore replaced by the date of their deportation to ghettos and extermination camps. The Holocaust Memorial in the Pinkas Synagogue is one long tombstone inscription commemorating those for whom a tombstone could not be erected.

The monument also features a unique exhibition of children’s drawings from Terezín (Theresienstadt) from 1942-1944. This selection of drawings, which are impressive testimony to the cruel fate of the children, are often the only memorial to those who did not survive.
