About the founding of Prague

share

One summer afternoon, Libuše, Přemysl and their entourage were looking out from the walls of Vyšehrad. The sun was setting in the west, its rays bathing the surrounding landscape in gold.

At that moment, Libuše stepped to the very edge of the ramparts, stretched out her hands towards the wooded hills on the opposite bank of the Vltava River, and prophesied: “I see a great and beautiful city whose fame will one day touch the stars. In the forest, there is a place where you will find a man carving the threshold of his house. Have a strong castle built there and name it Prague. And just as all princes and kings bow their heads before the threshold of a house, so too will even the most powerful one day bow before the castle and the town that will rise beneath it.”
