The FAMILY PERMAFROST exhibition project, featuring international participants, focuses on the themes of family and home. Whilst both concepts may seem banal and hollow in today’s media-saturated world, they serve as a testing ground for new experiences that examine the situation and state of contemporary society at its very foundations. We live in a world of rapid change and shifting values. This situation is also reflected in the expressive means of contemporary painting. As a highly sensitive yet critical platform of contemporary visual culture, painting – given its strongly subjective nature – has the potential to bring to the fore the interstices of these broader developments, which, within their suggested contours, can reveal what mainstream society only perceives after a certain delay. The title of the exhibition refers both to the theme of the family and to the climate crisis, which is fatally disrupting humanity’s hitherto seemingly immutable certainties.
