Filomena Borecká, a Czech artist living in Paris, has long been exploring breath and how it is shared. Her main means of artistic expression is drawing, which gives her the opportunity to capture the immediate moment and authentic experience. She lets her drawings come to life on gallery walls, where their lines organically permeate the exhibition space. For the National Gallery, the artist will create a work in situ: a large-scale abstract drawing depicting an “inner landscape” carried by the breath. In doing so, she will take viewers right into the midst of the act of creation.

Filomena Borecká enjoys crossing the boundaries of visual art and working with acoustics. In 2011, she created a remarkable multimedia project: Phrenos – Bank of Breath. This walk-through sound object is made from recycled hot-air balloon fabric and invites gallery visitors to participate. The artist points to the interconnectedness of beings through breath. “Inhalation and exhalation have no individual boundaries and are constantly shared with others,” explains Borecká, whose works deal with the themes of togetherness and reciprocity.
