Those wanting to know what a composition for chamber orchestra should sound like often reach for a recording made by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. The orchestra, which this year is celebrating the 65th anniversary of its founding, has always been intensively engaged with making recordings without compromising on quality. The present chief conductor of the Academy, the fabulous Grammy-winning violinist Joshua Bell, has perhaps further deepened the perception of orchestral music as a chamber music phenomenon, where every individual matters and where intimate communication among all the players is required.
