The Department of Theory and History of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague, in cooperation with the National Archives, has prepared an exhibition consisting mainly of previously unpublished materials. For the first time, it offers experts and the general public a more detailed insight into the establishment of the state design organization Stavoprojekt, whose activities have left an indelible mark on the appearance of Czech cities and landscapes and influenced the work of generations of architects. Stavoprojekt was founded in September 1948 as part of Československé stavební závody [Czechoslovak Construction Works], a giant organization that brought together collectivized construction companies. As a new state design institution, Stavoprojekt played a key role in integrating architecture into the processes of planned economy and construction in the spirit of the emerging socialist regime. The exhibition consists of three sections. The first maps the establishment and operation of the state design institution during the first five-year plan. The second part uses the example of a housing estate to reveal the societal priorities of the time, as well as the methods of typification. The third part provides an overview of Stavoprojekt’s diverse range of activities in terms of building typology. The exhibited artifacts mainly come from the unprocessed ČSSZ – Stavoprojekt fund of the National Archives and have not yet been presented to the public. Their unique raw form provides an authentic insight into the lives of architects and engineers in the early post-war years. The exhibition is complemented by equally exceptional items from the collections of the Municipal Museum of Železný Brod, as well as evidence cards documenting period field research conducted at the Czech Technical University, and footage from the National Film Archive’s newsreels. The project also includes a critical catalog entitled Stavoprojekt 1948–1953 / Practice and accompanying program. Datum und Uhrzeit Wed—Sun 14:00—19:00
