Old Town Square Christmas Market

In recent years, the Advent market on Old Town Square has been recognized annually by the world media as one of the most beautiful Christmas destinations in the world, and the markets on Old Town Square bring the atmosphere of a true Czech Christmas to the historic city center.

The daily lighting of the Christmas tree will be accompanied by an impressive animation show. The light animation will start every day at half past the hour, from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and market visitors will be able to see it. This year, the tree will light up to Ewa Farna’s song “Vánoce na míru” (Christmas Made to Measure) in a special arrangement for the occasion. On the opening day of the markets, the Vratislavka children’s choir will sing the song together with a violinist.

The markets traditionally support Czech producers and craftsmen. The stalls mainly offer Christmas goods and handmade products—glass and straw decorations, decorations made of ceramics, wood, rustling materials, beads, or dried fruits and spices. Ceramic and wooden nativity scenes, bobbin lace blankets, crocheted toys, bells and chimes, cookie cutters and wooden rolling pins will also be available.

The market will be filled with the aroma of Christmas treats and hot drinks — mulled wine, punch, mead, and hot apple cider. Paprika and herb sausages will be available for purchase, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free specialties such as pancakes, bread with pesto, gluten-free gingerbread, cottage cheese cake, and brownies. There will also be snails, oysters, lokše (potato pancakes), strudels, grilled oštiepok cheese, gingerbread, marzipan, Štramberské uši (ear-shaped cookies), frgále (fruit tarts), Hořické trubičky (cream-filled pastries), Christmas cookies, and many other delicacies.

Throughout the market, visitors can enjoy a cultural program on the large stage next to the statue of Jan Hus. The performances will focus on folklore, ethnography, adult and children’s choirs. Most of the performers will be Czech groups, but there will also be a number of choirs from all over Europe.

Children can look forward to popular weekend workshops again this year, which will take place every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. Young visitors will be able to make Christmas cards and small gifts.

This year, CNN Travel has once again mentioned them among the most beautiful markets in the world.
