Bethlemskapelle

The traditional Christmas exhibition will once again open in the underground rooms of the Bethlehem Chapel. This year's exhibition will attempt to evoke the atmosphere of old Czech St. Nicholas and Christmas markets. Christmas markets have always been an essential part of Advent and had a unique atmosphere. The first Christmas market was held in Vienna in 1294. In addition to everyday necessities, the individual stalls also offered special goods. These included oriental fruits, gingerbread, confectionery, and spices. There were also stalls where you could buy nativity scenes or individual figurines, as well as simple toys for children, often made from various natural fruits. At the markets, people could also buy various Christmas items that we still use today, even though their original meaning has gradually been lost, so we now perceive them more as Christmas decorations. A wide variety of refreshments were also sold: hot mead, mulled wine, punch, and roasted chestnuts. These markets have always served not only to sell goods, but also as a place to meet and create a festive atmosphere in anticipation of the approaching Christmas holidays.

On certain days, various folk craft techniques will be demonstrated at the exhibition (basket weaving, pottery, wood carving, etc.). Among the presenters will be a number of people who hold the official title of “Bearer of Folk Craft Traditions.”

Various musical groups will perform on a small stage, filling the space with carols and Christmas songs.

Admission: CZK 140
